The concept of a camera created specifically for children is not a completely new idea. Children love emulating adults and even the youngest understand that as adults, we enjoy using our gadgets, be it ipods, phones, kindles or cameras.

There are childrens toys resembling these expensive adult versions in every shape size and color. The manufacturers are very aware that children enjoy copying adults and for many years have made this type toy for them. The production of cheaper electronics has enabled manufacturers to include the latest technology inside  kids digital cameras fairly inexpensively in a kidiproof design.

The casing is designed to take the strain of all the dropping and accidental knocks that children regularly subject their possessions to. The design is chunky and easy to hold for little hands. It is worth remembering at this point that kids digital cameras are primarily toys and secondarily cameras. They function very well as a very basic digital camera.

A small number of functions are included which are designed to amuse but not confuse a 3-7 year old. The main point of the cameras is as a toy which can teach your child the
principles of photography, that is, looking at the viewfinder screen, whilst holding the camera with two hands and maintaining the shot you want whilst pressing the button.

If your child is particularly gadget-savvy then its probably best to go straight to a regular first camera if you feel they would look after it properly. For the vast majority of children these kiddie cameras are an excellent choice. Pixel quality is OK on PC or photo sized printouts but blown up on a pc the pixelation can be quite strong. But do kids of 3-7 care about pixel quality? – Probably not!

The Fisher Price Kid Tough – This camera seems on the surface to be the better of the two being waterproof as well. However, users have commented that they do seem to  ‘break’ quite frequently.

After researching these two products it became quite clear which was the favored product. The Vtech Kidizoom was rated much higher with positive testimonials on major shopping sites.
